My Father emigrated from Austria in 1934 and worked for the Santa Fe (AT&SF) in Chicago for most of his life. After the 2nd World War we could start to travel again using the free passes railroad employees were privileged to have. Several times we travelled from Chicago to the West Coast, pulled by these magnificent iron behemoths. Someday these great triumphs of transportation will be gone, frozen in some tomb (they're called “museums”), never again to thrill us with their awesome living power, or sing to us with their haunting baritone voices...
